Reception

Tony Bowyer Print is a family run commercial printing business; it was started up in 1969 by (yes) Tony Bowyer who fulfulled his first client orders from a workshop at the bottom of his garden in Branksome. We now occupy far more comfortable and well-equipped premises in Moordown, Bournemouth.

Tony has now more-or-less retired (but remains involved) having entrusted his creation to the second generation of Bowyers, Lee and Nichole.

Nichole has designed for thousands of print projects since joining the company in 1988. Her extensive client list includes Colleges, Hospitals, Football Leagues, Hotels, Language Schools and numerous local schools – as well as many hundreds of local and UK-wide businesses, large and small. Nichole works closely with her brother & colleague Lee and other members of the TBP team to ensure customers’ requirements are successfully met.

Lee has been managing our print room production since 1989. He pays great attention to detail – always producing finished print that meets his own high standards as well as that of the client. The combination of Nichole’s design knowledge and Lee’s vast print experience can only result in a stress-free and successful conclusion for clients – and, of course, it comes free as part of the service!

Coco joined the company early in 2013. She started at the bottom with knee-high hopes for her long term career; Poppy was recruited in 2015, accepting the post of Floor Manager, very much Robin to Coco’s Batman! They certainly seem popular with our customers.

From the beginning

The Tony Bowyer story

Leaving Ascot every morning to work in the prestigious advertising agency of Erwin, Wasey, Ruthrauff & Ryan was daunting – especially in the late 1950s when Park Lane was one of the best addresses in London!

At school I had always wanted to be a graphic designer but in those days everyone started at the bottom – as a messenger! I spent most of my days taking artwork to clients, letterpress blocks to newspapers and, on Tuesdays, Littlewoods Pools dividends to Press Offices in Fleet Street – this was really special as I ‘glided’ round the different offices in a chauffeur-driven Humber Super Snipe.

Promotion came. I was delegated to work on the Littlewoods Pools account as well as Charles Atlas – the first and most famous bodybuilder. Responsibilities included booking advertising space in all the newspapers and magazines, deciding on adverts and providing blocks to all the booked publications. This particular career route was not really my scene, so after three years I left the company, and London.

After marrying Daphne in 1962, moving to Bournemouth and a few jobs later, I decided in 1969 that I had to get back to my original love, graphic design. I started with signage, making hundreds of cold calls without success – but everyone I called on had the same question “you don’t do printing do you?”. So in 1969 Tony Bowyer Print was born – at the bottom of our garden in Branksome!

Having had experience in letterpress print from my London days, Daphne and I worked late into most nights producing very small orders.

By now lithographic printing was the order of the day, our existing workshop soon became too small, so we decided to expand and ‘Go Litho’! Without too much thought we rented a small basement workshop next door to the Bournemouth Fire Station (at this time it was situated in Holdenhurst Road, just by the Lansdowne) – a total disaster. A really damp and sometimes wet premises was not the place for paper and printing – so very soon we moved to Palmerston Road, Boscombe, opposite the old Horton Ice Cream factory (now a car park).

We quickly acquired three of four Litho presses, three more staff and a great list of clients. Having equipment that made us totally self-sufficient meant we could always produce print to an agreed delivery – in the seventies printers had a bad reputation for being unreliable!

The next generation

Tony Bowyer Print remains a family-run company and now operates from Croft Road, Moordown. Today daughter Nichole and son Lee have more than 30 years experience to draw on. Whether Litho or Digital printing, single or full colour, TBP can produce it.

We now provide a full and varied range of services which include an in-house design studio, digital plate making & high-speed digital printing. Most recently we have added to the mix our new Intec ColourCut Pro digital technology offering clients high-precision cutting, creasing, perforating & scoring to any shape of label, greetings card & small-scale packaging, and to a wide range of P.O.S. materials. This, combined with our ColorFlare dual laminating and foil-flaring equipment, allows us to offer affordable, eye-catching products for business, retail or personal use …
